The viewer was designed to only play videos from Google's servers. That restriction didn't last for long.

Famed Norwegian hacker Jon Lech Johansen, better known as DVD Jon, has taken the open source nature of Google's newly launched, browser-based video player to heart evidently.

It was announced earlier today that Google would be releasing an in-browser video player plug-in, designed seemingly to make Google Video a more interactive experience, instead of one that searches video but returns only text (readable instead of watchable) results.
