Hulu, the video streaming platform, appears to be on par with some of this year’s top movies when we tweak the numbers a tad. NewTeeVee reported that according to Buzzpoint’s findings, Hulu’s 2009 revenue positioned it just behind The Twilight Saga: New Moon and surpassed other hits like Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Up, and The Hangover. However, there’s a snag in this comparison: Hulu’s entire 2009 revenue of $120 million was used to align it with these films.
Audience Count: Drawing the Crowds
In terms of opening weekend viewer count, Hulu again topped Buzzpoint’s list. The platform boasted an impressive 42.5 million viewers in October alone. In comparison, the silver screen hit New Moon saw 20.0 million moviegoers during its opening weekend.
Yet, this comparison might be slightly skewed. The viewer data for Hulu is based on the entire month of October, whereas movie openings are limited to their initial weekends. Additionally, while moviegoers are committed to their film for about two to three hours, we can’t assume that Hulu users maintain the same level of site engagement.
The Bigger Picture on Hulu’s Popularity
Buzzpoint’s findings underline a significant point. While Hulu’s main content lineup revolves around television shows and not feature films, its metrics, when compared to Hollywood’s best, are still intriguing. These contrasts offer insights into where Hulu stands and how far it still has to go to earn the “blockbuster” label.
