AOL has named former Yahoo executive Brad Garlinghouse as President of its Internet and Mobile Communications.
Garlinghouse will also head up AOL's Silicon Valley operations from its Mountain View campus, acting as the West Coast lead for AOL Ventures, the company's venture capital arm led by Jon Brod.
Garlinghouse was most recently at Silver Lake Partners as an in-house senior advisor. Prior to Silver Lake, he spent nearly six years at Yahoo where he most recently acted as SVP of Communications and Communities. While at Yahoo, Garlinghouse penned the 2006 internal memo known as the "peanut butter manifesto" because it warned the company was spreading itself too thin.
During his time there, Yahoo Mail went from the number 3 service to the number 1 service. Garlinghouse also oversaw the company's Flickr photo-sharing service and Yahoo Groups.
"Tim has set out a clear strategy and vision for where he is taking this company as it becomes independent again," said Garlinghouse.
"I'm looking forward to working with him and the rest of the team to realize that vision."
