MYCIN, developed for investigating infectious blood diseases. Apart from its domain, MYCIN laid the foundation for the design of future knowledge-based systems. It consisted of over 400 rules, eventually used for training dialogue for medical residents at Stanford.

Another Stanford University brainchild from the 1970s, PROSPECTOR, was engineered for mineral exploration, providing a valuable example of the use of inference networks.
