1. Connect to Your Host via SSH or Telnet
Backing up a website begins on the server where the files live. Most modern web hosts expose a shell through SSH, and a few still support Telnet. If your host allows either, you can grab the data with only a keyboard and a small program on your own computer.
On Windows, the easiest client is PuTTY. Search for “PuTTY SSH client” or visit the official download page at
