Backing Up Your Existing OE Mail

When a computer is slated for replacement, the first thing many users overlook is the treasure trove of personal and professional messages stored in Outlook Express. Those messages - sometimes decades old - hold the history of your correspondence, project details, and even valuable attachments. Losing them means more than just a broken archive; it can erase a timeline of communication. That’s why a thorough backup is essential before moving to a new system. A backup gives you peace of mind and a safety net should anything go awry during the hardware upgrade.

There are two common approaches to capturing your OE data. The first uses a dedicated utility that automates the process, reducing the risk of missing files or corrupting data. The second involves a manual method that relies on locating the core message files on disk. Both strategies can be used together for maximum assurance, but starting with the automated tool is usually faster and less error‑prone.

The OEBackup utility, available from the official Onetouch support site, is a lightweight program designed specifically for Outlook Express users. After downloading the installer, run it as an administrator and follow the on‑screen wizard. When prompted, choose “Full Backup” to capture every component of your mail profile - including inbox, sent items, drafts, and any custom folders. Specify a destination folder on an external drive or network share that is not part of the system drive you will soon replace. Give the backup file a descriptive name that incorporates the date, such as “OE_Backup_2026-05-12.” The program then copies all relevant files and writes a log that you can review for any errors.
