Peer Review Findings for The Felt Source
Thank you for inviting me to assess your website. I approached this review with the usability checklist I developed over many years of testing. My goal was to surface what works well and highlight any areas where a quick tweak could elevate the experience for your visitors.
First impressions matter. The URL is concise and instantly recognizable, which helps users and search engines alike. When the page loads, essential content appears within the critical eight‑second window, and the overall aesthetic feels fresh and inviting. A well‑structured home page that presents key information at a glance reduces bounce rates and encourages deeper exploration.
Visuals and typography deserve particular praise. Text is set in a legible font with sufficient contrast, ensuring readability across devices. All images carry appropriate alt attributes, which not only supports accessibility but also provides context for screen readers and crawlers. The code base looks clean; you’ll notice there are no stray tags or broken links that could throw off rendering engines.
However, the site falls short when viewed on smaller screens or printed. The layout does not collapse gracefully for windows 640 pixels wide or less, and the printable version prints on two pages instead of one, which could frustrate users who want a hard copy of product details. Subsequent pages exacerbate the issue, remaining too wide for even 800‑pixel displays. A responsive framework or media queries would resolve these problems and improve mobile usability.
Navigation is consistently implemented, with text links placed at the top and bottom of every page. The search box is functional and prominent, and the sitemap is easily discoverable. These features make it straightforward for visitors to move between sections, locate products, or return to the home page without confusion.
Content quality is a standout. The site communicates its mission clearly and targets a defined audience - craft enthusiasts and professional decorators looking for premium felt products. Posts are organized logically, and the “New Products” sidebar keeps the page fresh. I didn’t test the shopping cart directly, but the interface appears user‑friendly, and the checkout flow seems designed for a smooth purchase experience. The fact that the items appear to ship to Goring‑by‑Sea in the UK indicates a working fulfillment system that can serve local customers.
The audience fit is excellent; the design, copy, and product range align with the expectations of craft hobbyists and commercial decorators alike.
Contact details are present but could be more visible. The address, email, and phone number are located on a dedicated page, yet the main page offers only an image of the phone number - meaning users cannot copy it into their device. Adding the number as plain text or a tel: link would streamline the process. I also noted two separate links - “About Us” and “Contact” - both leading to the same page. Consolidating them or providing a brief description of what each link offers would reduce redundancy. A footer on every page with quick contact info would aid visitors who wish to print a page and keep reference details handy.
From an SEO standpoint, the meta tags need attention. The meta description references a person named Betty Lukens, which may confuse search engines and visitors. The company name, The Felt Source, does not appear in the visible text of the home page, and the logo lacks an alt description. While the title tag supplies the name, ensuring it appears in the body and that all images have descriptive alt text will strengthen keyword relevance and accessibility.
