Ultimate Checklist On How To Revive A Dead Computer

Diagnosing Power and Hardware Failures

When a computer simply refuses to start, the most common culprit is a broken power path. Even if the system’s case lights up, an absent signal to the motherboard can keep the whole machine in darkness. Follow this detailed sequence to isolate the fault before replacing expensive parts.

1. Power Switch and Outlet
First, press the power button twice or thrice. Some systems require a quick burst of power; a single press may be ignored by the firmware. If the machine still shows no activity, try a different wall outlet or a known working outlet on the same circuit. Plug a lamp into the outlet; if the lamp fails to light, the outlet is dead and the circuit breaker may have tripped. In that case, reset the breaker or move to a different outlet.

2. Power Cord Inspection
Examine the cable from wall to the computer. Look for frays, exposed conductors, or a bent plug. Even a partially broken connector can cut the circuit. If you find any damage, replace the cord. You can use a replacement from the manufacturer’s website or a universal power cable that matches the PSU’s input voltage and connector type.

3. Motherboard Power Connectors
Open the case and locate the 24‑pin ATX connector and the 8‑pin (or 4‑pin) CPU power plug. Use a multimeter or a voltage tester to confirm 5 V, 12 V, and 3.3 V rails are present. A missing voltage means the PSU isn’t supplying power. In many cases, the problem is a loose or disconnected cable. Re‑seat the connectors and power the system again. If the issue persists, move on to the PSU test.

4. Power Supply Self‑Test
Most modern power supplies include a built‑in LED test. Disconnect the 24‑pin and CPU connectors, then short the green pin to any black pin on the ATX connector. If the LED lights and the fan spins, the PSU is delivering power. If the LED stays off, the supply is defective. A quick search on YouTube, e.g.,
