Yahoo continues to add to their myriad of services with the recent acquisition of DialPad. DialPad is an Internet telephony provider and will give Yahoo a nice lift further into the market. Yahoo already offers something of a VoIP service but it only works with their Instant Messenger service and both parties must have their latest version to do it. This will take them to the next level. Now, users will be able to utilize the instant messenger to call anyone with VoIP services.
DialPad's 14 million customers will make a nice addition to the 62 million Yahoo already claims. DialPad promises on their website that services won't change in the foreseeable future. Some industry watchers suggest though that the big reason for this purchase will be to pick up a lot of information and know-how about the VoIP world and since DialPad has been doing it since 1999, that made them a logical target.
The VoIP industry is becoming more competitive and some worry of some of Yahoo's other partnership may suffer. Currently Yahoo has a big partnership with SBC for DSL Services but Yahoo has partnered in the past and then separated and started their own aspect of a service. Yahoo used to have a deal with Google. Now they're major competitors. They also had a partnership with MapQuest in the past too. Yahoo's not afraid to learn as they go.
